What is it about?
The aim of OPTION B is to build on your chairing skills, broaden your perspective, and share the experience you have acquired since you gained certification, whether you are an experienced or aspiring chair. OPTION B will also confirm, reinforce and assess the key learning competencies that all decision-makers need to demonstrate and that are otherwise covered in OPTION A. You will be required to attend a one-day workshop and complete TWO assignments; one before and one after the workshop.
You will learn to:
• Jointly consider and apply the RMA, relevant legislation and planning documents to a wide variety of complex contexts
• Demonstrate awareness of the powers of a panel and chair and use those powers flexibly, ethically, fairly and appropriately
• Behave confidently when dealing with complex and unexpected issues and effectively lead and manage other panel members
• Effectively lead and manage the pre- and post-hearing processes
• Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement.
Who delivers the courses?
The Centre for Continuing Education has put together a great team of experienced facilitators to run the workshops. The team comprises Harry Bhana, a very experienced hearing chair, independent commissioner and expert planning witness; Adrienne Williams, an experienced hearing chair and former regional councillor, and Alison Wall, also an experienced chair and an ex-mayor and city councillor.
How am I assessed?
You must attend the workshop and successfully complete both a pre- and post-workshop assignment to achieve re-certification. The pre-workshop assignment must be submitted at the start of the workshop. After the workshop you will have four weeks to complete your post-workshop assignment, which in the main addresses skills and knowledge that are particularly important if you are chairing a hearing. The assignments require you to reflect on situations and scenarios and detail your own approach to resolving them. Most participants are likely to devote 10 to 20 hours to complete both assignments. Tutor support will be available.
Once assignments have been marked and moderated by an experienced team, certificates will be issued to those who have attended the workshop and successfully completed both assignments. Certificates will be valid for a further FIVE years.
You will not have an opportunity to re-submit either your pre or post-workshop assignment. At re-certification you will be given an ‘Achieved’ or ‘Not Achieved’ grading. If you are advised that you have not achieved the requirements of the re-certification course, you will be able to enrol in a later round of re-certification as either a panel member or chair.
